Red Sox Beat Dodgers in Game 5 of World Series

The Los Angeles Dodgers lost the 2018 World Series to the Boston Red Sox in Game 5 of the series Sunday night. With a final score of 5-1, this marked the second year the National League West champions lost the World Series – last year the Houston Astros beat the Dodgers in Game 7.

The Dodgers have won six World Series titles as a franchise; with their last win in 1988. This year’s title was the fourth win in 15 years for the Red Sox. Boston won the first two games of the Series, with the Dodgers winning in Game 3 with a final score of 3-2. The Red Sox won Games 4 and 5, claiming the 2018 championship title.

Many Dodger fans believe Game 4 should have been a Dodger victory if not for coach Dave Roberts. In the seventh inning, Roberts made the inexplicable decision to pull pitcher Rich Hill and put in relief pitchers instead. The game quickly went from a Dodger lead by four runs to a 9-6 loss to Boston. While Dodger fans booed from inside the stadium, the Red Sox were thrilled to see Hill go, who had been on fire the entire game.

Even President Trump weighed in on Roberts’ decision, tweeting “Watching the Dodgers/Red Sox final innings. It is amazing how a manager takes out a pitcher who is loose & dominating through almost 7 innings, Rich Hill of Dodgers, and brings in nervous reliever(s) who get shellacked. 4 run lead gone. Managers do it all the time, big mistake!” Many people noted online it was one of the first times they agreed with Trump. In response, Hill told reporters on Sunday he felt the president should be more concerned with more serious issues such as Saturday’s shooting at a Philadelphia synagogue instead of the decisions of a baseball team’s manager during a game.

While many were angered by Roberts’ decision and believe he cost the Dodgers a sure win in Game 4, the team has stood by him and it is believed he will be given a long-term contract extension. In the excitement of the World Series, it is easy to forget Roberts has led the Dodgers to two straight world series and three straight National League Championship Series appearances.

It remains to be seen how the Dodgers will regroup during offseason and whether they can overcome the issues they’ve faced in the last two Series to actually win the title. Dodger pitcher Clayton Kershaw has consistently been one of or the best pitcher in baseball for the past ten years, but can now opt out of his contract and has seen worsening stats during the postseason.
